Quality assurance (QA)

Quality assurance focuses on preventing defects through systematic processes, procedures, and standards built into how work gets done. QA is proactive, establishing the systems and controls that enable consistent quality outcomes. The goal is building quality in rather than inspecting defects out.

Examples

Quality management system: A supplier's ISO 9001-certified QMS defines processes for design control, supplier management, production, and corrective action. This systematic framework provides assurance that products will meet requirements.

Process validation: Before production begins, QA validates that manufacturing processes can consistently produce conforming products. Validation includes equipment qualification, process capability studies, and documentation of proven parameters.

Supplier QA program: An organization's supplier quality assurance program defines requirements for supplier qualification, ongoing surveillance, and performance management, ensuring that purchased materials meet quality standards.

Definition

QA differs fundamentally from quality control (QC). QA creates the conditions for quality through systems and processes. QC verifies that products meet specifications through inspection and testing. Both are necessary; QA prevents problems while QC catches those that slip through.

QA activities include developing quality standards and procedures, validating processes before production, training personnel, managing documentation, conducting internal audits, and driving continuous improvement. These activities create the foundation for quality outcomes.

Procurement interacts with QA through supplier qualification, quality agreements, and ongoing supplier quality management. Purchasing from suppliers with robust QA systems provides assurance that incoming materials will meet specifications.

QA certification standards like ISO 9001, AS9100 (aerospace), and IATF 16949 (automotive) provide frameworks for quality management systems. Certification indicates that an organization has implemented systematic quality practices and is subject to ongoing audits.
