Electronic manufacturing services (EMS)
Electronic manufacturing services providers specialize in manufacturing electronic products and assemblies for other companies. EMS firms offer PCB assembly, system integration, testing, and often design services and supply chain management. The EMS industry provides manufacturing infrastructure for the global electronics industry.
Examples
Full-service EMS: A large EMS provider offers complete manufacturing services: PCB assembly using SMT and through-hole processes, system integration, functional testing, packaging, and fulfillment. Customers provide designs; the EMS handles everything through shipment.
Specialized EMS: A smaller EMS provider focuses on high-mix, low-volume electronics manufacturing, serving customers who need flexibility and quick turnaround rather than high-volume efficiency.
Design and manufacturing EMS: An EMS provider offers design services alongside manufacturing, helping customers develop products that are optimized for manufacturability and then producing them.
Definition
The EMS industry emerged as electronics companies outsourced manufacturing to focus on design and marketing. EMS providers invested in assembly equipment, developed process expertise, and achieved scale that individual companies couldn't match.
EMS capabilities include surface mount technology (SMT) assembly, through-hole assembly, system integration and box build, testing and inspection, and increasingly, design and engineering services. Advanced EMS providers offer complete product realization.
Selecting EMS partners involves evaluating technical capabilities (equipment, processes, certifications), capacity and flexibility, quality systems, geographic footprint, and service offerings. Different EMS providers excel in different segments: high-volume commodity versus high-mix complex assemblies.
The EMS relationship model affects procurement. Some OEMs direct component sourcing, specifying approved suppliers. Others delegate procurement to the EMS, leveraging their purchasing scale. The model choice affects cost, control, and flexibility.
